Minimalism and Graphic Design for »Domestika« [an online course]

ONLINE COURSE »MINIMALISM«
When Domestika approached me with the idea of creating a video tutorial as an online course, I couldn’t immediately decide which topic I wanted to cover. Corporate Design? Logo Design? Icon Design? Editorial Design? What aspect of my knowledge would be most interesting to others?
After some doubts and reflections, I chose to focus on minimalist design. The core idea was to draw designers away from their computers and lead them back to the basics with an analog project. All that was needed were cardboards in two different colors, and the tools: ruler, pencil, scissors and glue. Domestika agreed and so I began working with the Berlin team to develop the course structure.
Initially I thought we would just be setting a general guideline for the shoot, but it soon became apparent that the preparation required was almost choreographic in nature. Nothing was to be left to chance. This meticulous approach, which only partially aligned with my own working style, became something I learned more about as the project clarified the role it demanded of me and the team.
Another small surprise came before filming began: Domestika’s »Zero Teleprompter Policy.« After all texts for the chapters had been written and proofread, I was informed that I could not read the polished texts in front of the camera but would have to memorize them instead. I was reassured with, »Don’t worry, we’re good at providing live cues.«
Moderately nervous but well-prepared, I went to Berlin, where I met my project partners in person and we worked on the recordings over the course of a tightly scheduled week. It was a lot of work and a lot of learning. An excellent experience.
